Nono UX Research

Nono UX Research

Overview

During my Master’s in UI/UX Design, I participated in a hackathon organized by Campus Fonderie de l’Image in Paris. The event involved forming teams of six students, and over the course of a week, we tackled challenges presented by various participating companies and startups.

Our team chose to collaborate with Nono, a Paris-based startup that provides portable battery hubs in shopping centers and supermarkets. The battery rentals, accessible via web and mobile applications, are completely free, as they are offered by the stores hosting the battery terminals.

Process

The challenge

Nono faced two main challenges:

  • First, they needed to motivate users of their web application to download the mobile app.
  • Second, they aimed to integrate brands into the user experience to transform the app into a branded advertising network.
  • Additionally, if time allowed, we were tasked with redesigning the web application itself.

Our approach

As the team leader, my role was to plan the stages of our work throughout the hackathon. We started by creating a shared Notion database and dividing roles and tasks among the team. Throughout the week, we stayed in close contact with the two founders of Nono for updates, questions, and interviews.

Our plan was to conduct thorough UX research during the first few days, allowing us to analyze the problems and explore potential solutions. We employed techniques such as brainstorming, benchmarking, empathy maps, experience mapping and storyboarding.

Afterward, we moved on to developing a visual solution, creating the presentation, and drafting a detailed document that outlined our UX research. The document also included additional solutions and recommendations that we discovered during the initial phase of our work.

Outcome

Our research proved fruitful, and we were able to offer multiple solutions to Nono’s challenges. Specifically, we suggested:

  • An automated system that, when the user unlocks a battery, directs them to either download the app from the app store (if their phone’s battery level is 15% or higher, for example) or directly to the web app (if the battery level is below 15%).
  • A strategy to integrate supermarket brands into both the app and the battery stations.
  • A redesign of the web app.
  • A loyalty card system within the app, along with other solutions to encourage users to keep the app installed after using it.

The app’s founders were completely satisfied with our proposals and awarded us the highest score for our results.
